THE FESTIVAL AT CHABYSH 2006
SUCCESS ON ALL LEVELS
The success of the international festival At Chabysh 2006 (November
4 - 7), dedicated to the kyrgyz horse and organized according
to the decree of the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic,
was undeniable as well in its cultural and sporting dimension
as on the level of its role in the rehabilitation of the kyrgyz
horse.
All the program proceeded in front of a public enthusiastic,
of which the total number was estimated at 10 000 people (Kyrgyz,
Europeans, Americans, Kazakh, Japanese, etc).
This festival also aroused a keen interest on behalf of the
kyrgyz and international media, with the presence of about 25
journalists and photographers, and several teams of radio and
television (from Kyrgyzstan, Europe and USA).
The horse races "endurance", for the only horses
of kyrgyz type - Kunan chabysh, Byshty chabysh and Bash Baige
- counted a total of 52 competitors from Issyk Kul, Naryn and
Chuy oblasts.
The various traditional kyrgyz horse games - kok boru, kyz
kuumai, tyiyn enmei, oodarysh - and the horse game organized
by the American cow-boys - barrel racing - counted more than
one hundred of participants in majority kyrgyz, but also european
and american for the international competitions kyz kuumai and
barrel racing.
The cultural program held the attention of many participants,
gathered in the village of the artists and the craftsmen as
in front of the stage where proceeded the concerts, the performances
of the akyns and the manashis (kyrgyz bards), of Sakhna theater
company and of the horse show of the american cow-boys.
A team of more than 60 volunteers, Kirghiz, Europeans and American,
allowed to conclude the organization of this event.
The festival At Chabysh thus answered to the objectives laid
down by the foundation Kyrgyz Ate :
• to highlight the qualities of the horse of kyrgyz type ;
• to identify the best horses of kyrgyz type for the revival
of the breeding;
• to start again the races on long distance, in varied grounds
and mountain, by introducing the rules of the international
discipline "marathon - endurance", in sight to select
the best riders and horses, then to create a Kyrgyz national
team ;
• to inform and encourage the stockbreeders, riders and trainers
of horses of kyrgyz type by the distribution of booklets and
the attribution of prizes ;
• to raise the interest of an international public;
• to attract the local and international media (journalists,
photographers, televisions, radios, etc.);
• to support the sporting, cultural, artistic and scientific
exchanges;
• to open a window on other equestrian cultures - the honorable
guest 2006 was the American cow-boys of Wyoming - USA;
• to be used as model for others events organized by public
or private institutions, in others areas of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Following the festival At Chabysh 2006, the foundation Kyrgyz
Ate was requested to give its support for several projects,
in particular:
• development of several breedings of horses of kyrgyz type
in the oblasts of Issyk Kul and of Naryn;
• organization of local horse races reserved for the horses
of kyrgyz type in the oblasts of Chuy, Naryn and Issyk Kul;
• development of the traditional breeding in the area of Song
Kul;
• program of UNESCO for the safeguarding of the kyrgyz horse;
• introduction of horses of kyrgyz type into several touristic
companies, specialized in the field of the horseback trek;
• formation of guides and installation of micro-projects in
the field of ecotourism.
Such a success forced to set up the edition At Chabysh 2007,
which will be held on the same spot, on November 2, 3 and 4,
with perhaps the horse culture Chippewa - North Dakota, the
USA - as honorable guest.
RACES ON LONG DISTANCE
the example "At Chabysh"
Knowing that the horse races are the principal engine of the
horse breeding, the program of the festival At Chabysh 2006
counted three races "endurance - marathon" reserved
for the horses of kyrgyz type: kunan (less than 3 years) - 11,2
km, bychty (3 and 4 years) - 12,7 km, and bach Baïgue (more
than 5 years old) - 12,7 km + 14,5 km = 29,2 km
The information campaign was carried out from May to July,
everywhere in the kyrgyz republic, with distribution of the
booklet "At Chabysh 2006" (standard of the horse of
kyrgyz type, rules of the races, advices for the training of
the horses, festival program), visit of the stockbreeders and
villagers, meeting organized by the mayors of the villages or
private institutions, by several arcicultural networks, etc.
The selection of the horses was carried out during three weeks,
between September and October 2006, by a committee of specialists
from Kyrgyzstan, England and France, brought together by the
Foundation Kyrgyz Ate - of which Sadyk Dordovich Omurzakov (director
of the equine laboratory of the Agrarian Academy of the Kyrgyz
Republic) and its assistant, Ms. Vicky (veterinary), Marie-Ange
Scolan (leaer of the horse program of the festival) and Jacqueline
Ripart (director of the festival).
A card of identification was drawn up for each selected horse,
which held place of inscription for the races.
Assessment of these two weeks of selection:
• more than 350 horses (males) and 1 mare were presented on
the 26 places for selection, chosen in the oblasts of Chuy,
Naryn and Issyk Kul;
• the committee of selection also went in the oblast of Osh
(valley of Alaï Kuu) and Sussamyr valley, where no one horse
was selected because of the lack of training;
• 116 horses of kyrgyz type were selected for the races according
to the three categories : kunan, bychty and Bach baïgue;
• the committee of selection noticed a great quality of the
horses presented which, for the majority answered to the standard
of the kyrgyz horse and well trained, and whose physical condition
was excellent (contrary to the horses presented in 2005).
During the festival, and according to bases of the rules of
the international discipline of endurance (free speed, departure
in one group), veterinary controls were obligatory for all the
competitors. They were carried out by two french veterinary
doctors - Cécile Magnan and Stéphanie Marchand, assisted by
their own french team and by two kyrgyz veterinaries :
- races kunan, bychty : a control before the departure and another
one half an hour after the arrival.
- race bach baïgue : a control before the departure, the second
control at the end of first loop (14,7 km) and a third control
half an hour after the
The veterinary examinations which were carried out are as follows
: heart rate; breath frequency; ocular mucous membrane; fold
of skin; capillary time; intestinal transit; pace.
The route was prepared and marked out by Rash Obolbekov (Kyrgyzstan),
which directed a team of 30 hosmen and controllers (from Barskoon
area). A team of 7 judges, directed by the French specialist
Patrick Cambournac, took care of the respect of the rules and
of the control of the departures and arrivals.
The analysis of the results, in particular those of veterinary
controls, is on the way. But right now, they confirm a progress
compared to the results of the races At Chabysh 2005 : few horses
were penalized by the lack of training, and the horse of kyrgyz
type proved qualities of resistance, endurance and recovery
which formerly made the celebrity of the ancestral horse of
the kyrgyz nomads.
One can quote by way of example:
• winner of the price of the "best condition" for
Bach Baigue: heart rate of 26 beats per minute before the race,
33 beats/mn at the intermediate control, and of 48 beats/mn
after the race, after having carried out the way at a mean spead
of 15,3 km/h
• winner of the price Bach Baigue: performance of 17,23 km/heure
of average, with a heart rate of 42 pulsations per minute before
the departure, 49 beats/mn at the intermediate control, and
57 beats/mn after the final arrival.
• winner of the price of the "best condition" for
"bychty" : performance of 18,34 km/h. of average,
with a heart rate of 28 beats/mn before the departure, 46 beats/mn
after the arrival, having carried out the way at a mean speed
of 18,34 km/h;
• winner of the price of the "best condition" for
kunan : heart rate of 25 beats per minute before the race, and
of 40 beats/mn after the race, having carried out the way at
a mean speed of 18,5 km/h.
Concerning the speed, it is interesting to note the km/h. average,
for the competitors of the race Bach baïgue, knowing that it
is held in mountain, between 1 800 and 2 300 meters of altitude,
with passage of rivers, crossing of pass, difficult ground,
stiff slopes, etc.

52 horses from Issyk-Kul, Naryn and Chui regions had took part
at the horse races.
